City Turns up Heat on Dog Owners

Victoria -- The rescue of a german shepherd from a sweltering SUV Thursday morning, involved two Victoria Police officers, an animal control officer and a tow truck. The cost to taxpayers: more than $300. But all the dog's owner paind to get his pooch back from the pound was $35, the impound fee. The city of Victoria is about to get tough on dog owners who leave their pets inside a hot vehicle. It's ammending the Animal Control Bylaw to add fines. Councillor Thornton-Joe says education is key, but an animal's safety is crucial. She says fines would likely cover the cost of rescuing an animal and keeping it at the pound until it's claimed. A dog owner herself, Thornton-Joe lets 13 year old Akela cool down in the shade with plenty of water. "People don't realize that animals need to pant to cool off. They cool through the pads of their feet. Even on a hot day, even with te windows rolled down, the car can get very hot in a very short time," she says. Inside a black SUV, the temperature can rise from 23 ot 30 degrees in less than 10 minutes. The city's bylaws could change as soon as this fall. It's a move that many dog owners support, but they admit they wouldn't mind even tougher penalities. "I can't say this enough. There's no reason to leave a dog in a car in this weather," says Victoria SPCA Manager, Penny Stone. "I would love if they could be given a ticket right there and then." The owner of the German Shepherd was not charged under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ...

The London Dog Owners Association and the City of London host an annual event called Pooch Plunge. I am the coordinator for this event representing The London Dog Owners Association where we fund raise for a non profit organization who is register with the city. Our sponsor this year was CanFix(Ontario Spay and Neuter Task Force). Great organization. Pooch Plunge, great event, where dogs can swim in a community pool. This event took place September 4th at Stronach Community Pool here in London Ontario. Have a gander. You have dogs who like the water so they are in the deep in and than you have dogs wading in the splash pad and for the ones that don't like the water they are running around just like they are in an off leash dog park. Chattanooga the "Train Dog"

A stray dog was hit by a train at the Union Pacific yard in Phoenix, Arizona in the summer of 2010. He was rescued by a Good Samaritan and received medical treatment in Arizona Humane Society's Second Chance Animal Hospital(TM). Our veterinarians have been able to rehabilitate the injured pooch and provide him with the mobility and socialization to allow him to have a normal life. His second surgery will include grafting pads to his back legs so that he can run and play without having to wear bandages to protect his back "paws". Chattanooga is looking forward to finding his forever home after spending some time in foster care.
